During the Southern Liang Dynasty, Emperor Wu of Liang was a strong advocate of Buddhism and was enthusiastic about building temples. One day, Patriarch Bodhidharma returned from his meditation retreat, and Emperor Wu warmly welcomed him, boasting, 'Master, look at all the temples I have built in the kingdom. I must have accumulated a great deal of merit.'

However, Patriarch Bodhidharma shook his head and said to Emperor Wu, 'True cultivation of Buddhism is not external; it resides within one's heart.'

Emperor Wu sought fame and glory rather than true understanding of the Dharma,
Bodhidharma pointed out that the emperor's efforts were in vain.
One scripture cannot compare to mastering the three practices,
And building one temple falls short of cultivating a virtuous heart.

Building temples may seem to generate profound merit,
But without a pure heart, there is no true merit.
If one's heart is devoted to kindness and virtue,
Even without donating wealth, their merit remains profound."
